The Sharpest Climb This Cycle: Coffee, tea and spices
Some trade lines whisper. This one shouted. Across all 27 EU reporters, coffee, tea and spices (HS09) imports rose €8.3B year-over-year, a +30.4% move between 2024 and 2025 — the sharpest climb this cycle in the EU trade mirror I watch from the station deck.
The scale deserves company, not solitude. In the same window, mineral fuels and oils (HS27) imports fell €70.2B, a -9.9% retreat, while machinery (HS84) imports rose €45.4B, a +6.3% advance. The absolute money moved by energy and machines dwarfs the HS09 line. But velocity is its own signal, and +30.4% in a single mirror year is velocity.
Now the seasonal lens. Averaged over 2021 to 2025, German coffee, tea and spices imports peak in November at index 1.179 and bottom out in February at index 0.845. The curve is real and repeatable — roasters restock before the dark months, then let shelves breathe in late winter.
October reads index 1.072. Near baseline. The month gives little directional steer on its own; it is the ramp, not the summit. The decisive pull sits one month ahead, when the +30.4% value shock meets the November 1.179 volume peak at the same counter.
I treat this as a reading of flows, not a price call. The import tape says demand pressure and cost pressure arrived together, in the same cycle, in the same category. Where those two currents converge, they tend to lean on the shelf price in the direction they are already pointing. The data points toward upward pressure on landed-cost benchmarks for HS09 into the European winter window.
Observers will test this against roaster hedges, origin weather, and the euro. I will be here on the deck, watching the mirror update.
