The Sharpest Climb This Cycle: Coffee, tea and spices
The ledger this cycle offers one line that refuses to blend in. Across all 27 EU reporters, coffee, tea and spices imports rose €8.3B year-over-year, a move of +30.4% from 2024 to 2025. That is the sharpest climb in the mirror, and it arrives in a year when most other chapters are telling calmer stories.
Set it against the giants of the manifest, and the shape sharpens. Mineral fuels and oils fell €70.2B year-over-year, a drop of -9.9%. Machinery rose €45.4B, a lift of +6.3%. Coffee, tea and spices is a smaller chapter in absolute weight, but its rate of change dwarfs them both.
A +30.4% jump in a chapter this old is rarely a quiet signal. The import bill has moved because the input cost has moved, because weather, freight and harvest have all leaned in the same direction. The EU drinks what it imports here. There is no domestic substitute waiting in the wings.
Seasonality tells the next part of the story with its usual patience. In Germany, imports of coffee, tea and spices peak in November at an index of 1.179 and bottom out in February at 0.845, averaged across 2021–2025. The calendar builds a wave; buyers front-load before the winter shelves.
October reads 1.072. The seasonal pattern sits near its baseline, so volume this month gives little directional steer on its own. The interesting pressure is upstream of the shelf, in the +30.4% that has already landed in the ledger, not in a thin October tick.
Taken together, the data points toward continued upward pressure on the cost base of this chapter heading into the November peak. I will not call a price. I will only note that the flows have already spoken, and they have not whispered.
